"Parenting Under Stress" Group

Who Can attend?

Anyone (parents, grandparents, caregivers) who is faced with many family challenges, such as deviant teens; siblings who constantly bicker; children who have trouble in school; family members who are struggling with alcohol, drugs, and other addications; and families who do not communicate with one another.

Some of the parenting stresses that will be addressed include, but not limited to children with special needs, financial stress, chemical dependency, blended families, separation/divorce and/or custody/visitation disputes, single parenting, family violence, and anger management.

  • About discipline versus punishment
  • About rewards and consequences
  • How to be creative parents
  • That having “fun” can be simple
  • Steps to behavior change
  • More about children and their feelings
  • How to handle conflicts
  • About family values and how relevant it is to nurturing
  • About possible warning signs of suicidal behavior in children

Group Facilitator’s Bio

Linda Branwell, LISW, CDCA, is a Licensed Independent Social Worker with a certification in chemical dependency. Linda began her work in the field of social work in 2004, providing home-based case management services to families. Upon completion of her Master’s degree in Social Work from Indiana University South Bend, Linda went on to provide mental health services in a community mental health center. During her tenure there, Linda provided individual therapy, family therapy, and group therapy before opening her private practice.

Group Description

“Parenting Under Stress” is a 12-week program that is designed to educate and support parents who are experiencing stresses in their lives. This program allows participants to share parenting issues with others in the group and to gain information and support. The 12 sessions cover some of the toughest issues facing children and families today.

Group Goals

  • To increase knowledge about children and parenting
  • To gain increased empathy with children
  • To understand how one’s life experiences can affect parenting
  • To take credit for healthy parenting practices
  • To learn about special parenting stressors and how they affect parenting
  • To learn healthy parenting practices
